" UHURU is classical Robert Ruark Africa storytelling. I grew up reading Ruark's columns in the old Field & Stream magazine, and finding a lot of meaning in the stories. Back in the 1960s when Ruark was doing his African safaries, it was the eve of Independence, and Ruark's perceptions are very much that of a "European" and white hunter. But his accounts of local native Africans, although a little Imperial, is not unsympathetic. Some are downright admiring. It was a time of major change in Africa, and few really knew what would unfold. Some years later, as a member of the Peace Corps, I would meet these same native Africans, but in a very different context. What was unfolding at the time Ruark wrote UHURU is still an unfinished story, with many different perspectives, depending on who you are. For readers who enjoy outdoor adventures and hunting stories, and who always have fantasized about an African hunting safari, this book, which is more than just hunting stories, and human interest as well, will not disappoint."
