Ukhamba Zulu Beer Pot Large 23cm Diameter 28cm High
THIS ELEGANT ZULU VESSEL IS HANDMADE FROM TERRACOTTA CLAY. ITS SLEEK SURFACE IS EMBELLISHED BY A CIRCULAR ROW OF HUNDREDS OF ENGRAVED INDENTATIONS. THESE EMBELLISHMENTS SERVE BOTH AN AESTHETIC PURPOSE AND AS A TOOL TO FACILITATE A HAND GRIP WHILE DRINKING. THIS TYPE OF POT IS KNOWN AS UKHAMBA AND IS USED AS A COMMUNAL DRINKING VESSEL. IT HAS A LID THAT FITS BUT NOT CLEAR IF GOES TOGETHER SINCE ITS DECORATION IS DIFFERENT.
Beer has been made in the Zulu region for at least a millennium and is still important in Zulu life today. Beer is also used during rituals and ancestral rites. It is dispensed at celebrations including, Lobola negotiations, weddings and coming of age festivities. It is an integral part of funerals, poured as a libation to the ancestors and for communication with the spirit world. In short, beer signifies complex cultural meanings within the life of Zulu people.
