"Lacebark elm"

Lacebark Elm, also known as the Chinese Elm or Drake Elm, has the most beautiful bark - green, gray, orange and brown mottled and flaking in small thin plates. This is a handsome tree, often with a trunk that forks and produces a vase shape similar to American Elm. The Lacebark Elm usually gets no more than 13-18m tall.

Most elms produce their little winged "samaras" in the spring; this one fruits in the fall. The samaras are flat and papery, and rather showy hanging in dense clusters. Lacebark Elm is native to China, Korea and Japan. Lacebark Elm is a fast growing tree that is adaptable to most soil types. It likes full sun to partial shade. The Lacebark Elm is not as tolerant of drought as Siberian elm. Most of the elms make great shade and avenue trees and the Lacebark Elm is one of the best. This is a good replacement for American elm which is apparently going extinct due to Dutch elm disease. Foliage in autumn often turns shades of red and purple. With its multi-colored exfoliating bark, Lacebark Elm is especially attractive in winter. Also makes a great bonsai. The Lacebark Elm is cold hardy to USDA zone 5.

Recommended Planting Instructions:

Scarification: Soak in water for 48 hours, change water each day. Stratification: Cold Stratify for 90 days. Germination: Sow seed 1/16" deep, tamp soil, and mulch seed bed. Other: Don't get the seed to wet during germination or it can rot, keep it on the dryer side.

Seed Specifications: Purity - 100%; Projected Germination Rate - 86%; Where Harvested (location/year) - China (2006)
