Bodley Head, 1964, Hardback with removable protective plastic wrap - Modern Classics - 939 pp.
Absurd, brilliant and profound. James Joyce's novel Ulysses is said to be one of the most important works in Modernist literature.
Ulysses chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. The novel imitates registers of centuries of English literature and is highly allusive. This rambling tale of a single day in Dublin across the lives of many characters, it is at first glance chaotic but in fact meticulously structured.
The novel was the subject of a famous obscenity trial in 1933, but was found by a U.S. district court in New York to be a work of art. The furor over the novel made Joyce a celebrity.
