The Euro originated in the 1991 Maastricht Treaty, in which the 12 original member countries of the European Community (now the European Union) created an economic and  monetary union  and a corresponding common unit of exchange.The new currency, the Euro, was officially issued on January 1, 1999.

Obverse

A reproduction of the Vitruvian Man, a world renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1492, is encircled by the twelve stars of Europe. Italian Republic monogram above. Date and mint mark are at sides of the Leonardo design.

Reverse

On the right, next to the numerical face value, a map of the Europe with the twelve vertical stars symbolizes the gathering of the nations of the European Union. The word "EURO" (part of the face value) is in relief above the map of Europe.
