William Papas 'Bill Papas': A major twentieth century watercolorist, illustrator, printmaker and caricaturist, Bill Papas was born in South Africa and served (at age fifteen) in that nation's air force during the Second World War. At the war's end he traveled through Europe and studied art periodically at the Beckenham School of Art, London, and the Cite Universitie, Paris. Papas returned to South Africa in 1952 and began working as both an artist and a reporter for the Cape Times and Johannesburg Star. His work as a newspaper artist at the famous Nelson Mandela treason trials, Pretoria, brought his art to international attention and, in 1959, he became the political cartoonists for The Guardian, London. Bill Papas later became a leading political cartoonist for The Sunday Times (1960-65) and Punch Magazine (1966-71). At this period his art was syndicated in more than 100 newspapers throughout the world. Bill Papas authored and illustrated Under the Tablecloth (1952).
