Two things make a difficult situation easier: light and communications. Imagine breaking down in the middle of nowhere with a flat cellphone. This little gadget is both a torch and a cellphone charger and it never needs batteries, just a little bit of human power. It has a crank handle that you use to charge a small rechargeable battery inside the torch, which can then be used for light or cellphone charging.

Firstly, the torch:

This is a 3 LED flashlight that will give 25 minutes of light for a minute of cranking. It has two modes, normal "ON" and then an emergency flashing mode. We found the torch gave enough light to easily navigate a dark room at night.

And the cellphone charger:

It has cell phone adapters for pretty much all the Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, Samsung and Ericsson cell phones. 3 minutes of cranking gives 3-8 minutes of talk time, depending on how power hungry the cellphone is. Really useful if there is no mains around (or you have forgotten your charger).
