Detail of the stitching mechanism
Gritzner invented a far ahead of its time mechanism in 1879. It included a double rotating catcher with spool lifter, rotating thread supply and thread tension control. It was only till after 1930 the competition applied his invention in their own sewing machines. Often a great invention is under-valued by others.
Selection of machine parts and tools
The toolbox in the machine stores a variety of parts and tools. All of these are original.
Cover
The woodwork of the machine is still in very good shape considering its age. Apply good quality furniture oil for maintenance.

A bit of history
Max Carl Gritzner (*1825-†1892) Born in Vienna. Died in Durlach.
Gritzner obtained degrees from the polytechnics of Vienna and Karlsruhe in mathematics and mechanical engineering. He moved to the United States in 1850 and was employed by Isaac Meritt Singer and started as a junior design engineer in Singer’s new sewing machine works. In 1872 he moved back to Germany and founded his own works together with his father in Durlach. From 1887 onwards the factory also produced bicycles and even motor bikes as from 1903. The aftermath of the Great War caused manufacturers to suffer and the depression that followed made Gritzner to merge with Kayser to form „Gritzner-Kayser AG“ in 1931. A big fire destroyed most of the factory in 1955 and the refitted factory finally merged with „G.M. Pfaff A.G“ in 1957. Singer of the USA is known to be world market leader. Gritzner however was the „Rolls Royce“ among the hand- and pedal driven sewing machines.
