Flora Danica is a Danish jewelry company that uses real plant parts to make jewelry.  This mid-century piece was made by Orla Eggert, who devised a way to use real plant material (usually leaves or sprigs), dip them in silver and then in gold.  Therefore, this brooch was once a real plant.  This is quite noticeable by the amazing natural texture and form of the leaf.  Every single Danica Eggert piece is unique, as it's made from and based on natural material.

The history of Flora Danica goes back to 1953, when Orla Eggert and his wife Grethe Eggert, the founders of Flora Danica Jewelry, established the company in Copenhagen. Inspired by the beauty of the autumn leaves slowly dropping from the trees against a low autumn sun, Orla Eggert developed the idea to make jewelry based on the unique design created by nature. The first pieces of Flora Danica Jewelry was based on copper plating of flowers and leaves which after being skillfully turned into jewelry by craftsmen was coated with 24 ct of gold. However, the copper was soon replaced by Sterling Silver, which also today forms the basis of each individual piece of Flora Danica Jewelry.

The brooch has an exquisite "antique" finish and is perfect to add to your collection.

Excellent Vintage condition ~ back of the pin has a signature plaque that reads, "Flora Danica Sterling 925 Eggert Denmark"
