This Union Penny of 1960 was used as a sales token for South African medical doctors in the early 1960s.

It is not only unrecorded in Hern’s South African Tokens, but I also cannot find any information on it anywhere – including the world wide web.

What is especially interesting, is that the sales / advertising brochure accompanying it, actually gives a small summary (in both English and Afrikaans) of the coinage of South Africa since the times of Jan van Riebeeck’s Dutch East India Company (VOC)...
