Very unusual carnival glass trinket box, in the shape of a wheel barrow, in mint condition.
What is Carnival Glass?
Carnival glass is pressed glass that has an iridescent coating applied. If it has not been iridized, then it is not carnival glass.
How is Carnival Glass Made?
Carnival glass is pressed glass (that is, glass that has been formed by being pressed into a mold while in a hot, molten form). As it cools down, the glass takes on the shape and detail of the mold. Once removed from the mold, and while it is still hot, it is sprayed with metallic salts in liquid form, giving it the "oil on water" multi-colour appearance.
Patterns and Colours
There are about 2 000 different patterns in carnival glass. Colours too can be confusing. The most common is the amber colour of the jars above. The colours are defined by the colour of the glass, and not the iridescent coating.
Carival Glass as Collector's Item
Carnival glass is becoming collectable, and due to the fact that there are so many aspects to carnival glass, its collection can be both exhilirating and frustrating.
