Unusual Elaborately Hand Carved Nyami Nyami Zambezi River Snake Head Handle Walking Stick

AN UNUSUAL HAND CARVED NYAMI NYAMI SNAKE HEAD HANDLE WALKING STICK THAT ORIGINATES FROM THE ZAMBEZI VALLEY AREA IN ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST ELABORATE AND INTRICATE HAND CARVED ITEMS I HAVE COME ACROSS. CARVED BY A SHONA CARVER AT LATE KARIBA.
 
Nyaminyami is the ancestral spirit or of the BaTonga people in the middle Zambezi Valley. The Tonga inhabited both banks of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe and Zambia for centuries. Much of the local Batonga population was then displaced to make way for the Kaiba Dam but the legend of the Nyami Nyami lives on. Nyami Nyami is a mystical creature that is said to live at the bottom of the Zambezi river in Zimbabwe and is said to be half snake and half fish. The Nyami Nyami protects the river and is respected by the local Shona and Tonga people. The Nyami Nyami has the ability to take the lives of the people that live along it's river banks and many stories have been told about the lives that have been lost in the river for lack of respect to the creature and the river.
 
THIS NYAMI NYAMI CANE HAS A LOOPED SNAKE HEAD HANDLE WITH SPIRALED SHAFT AND CARVED INTO THE SHAFT IS AFRICAN PEOPLE AND BIRDS. ELABORATE WOODEN RINGS ARE CARVED OUT OF THE ONE PIECE OF IRONWOOD.NEAR THE BOTTOM IS A TOOTHLIKE CALABAS SHAPED BALL ALSO CARVED AND EMBEDDED IN A WOODEN PRISON. IT FORMS PART OF THE WHOLE AND CANNOT BE REMOVED. THE ENTIRE NYAMI WALKING STICK HAS BEEN CARVED TO THE HIGHEST OF STANDARDS.
 
These elaborately carved Nyami walking stick artifacts has since gained popularity because of the aura and mystique surrounding the carved artifact of the snake. IT CAN BE USED AS A WALKING STICK, OR UNUSUAL DECORATIVE ITEM FOR YOUR STUDY.
