UNUSUAL VINTAGE COLLECTABLE TUSSIE MUSSIE (BOUTONNIER) BROOCH FOR FLOWER POSY
Made by American pewter jewellers, the Metzke family, this rather special little collectable is a throw-back to a bygone era. A "tussie mussie" is a Victorian-style bouquet brooch, allowing the wearer to pop a small posy of flowers into a vase-like container and wear the whole thing as a wonderful jewellery alternative to a boutonnier, or button-hole. In the Victorian era often referred to as a nosegay. This collectable item is reallly solid, weighing 23,13 grams and measuring a substantial 75 mm x 30 mm. It is made out of pewter and has a sheen rather than a high shine finish. The exterior has been worked with a raised tactile leaf design detail and the top of the brooch segment is finishe with a flouris of leaves coming out of the "vase". It is double - 3D if you like - in order ot accommodate the flower posy of your choice. Please note - you can't put water into this tussie mussie. You simply pop the flowers in and wear it for the day or occasion. However, you can wrap the stems of your flowers in wet cottonwood or tissue to prolong their life and the vibrancy of your unusual brooch! The piece has the hallmarks "Metzke" and the year "1980", no doubt its year of making. Pewter does have a buffed texture but generallly the condition is excellent. Not seen many of these around - rather a fascinating conversation piece and collectable!
