Unveiling of the Kruger Statue on Church Square, 1954. Afrikaans set of 3: Gold, silver and bronze medals in box of issue
Laidlaw 0074a
Gold medal: 9ct, 17 gm. Silver medal: 29 gm
The various components of the statue of President Kruger, financed by Sammy Marks before the Boer War, were in Lourenco Marques when war broke out. Kitchener took the four corner figures to England and in 1913 the main figure was erected in Princess Park, Pretoria.
Through the efforts of Gen Smuts and Lord Milner the corner figures were returned to South Africa in 1921 and the completed statue was erected in front of Pretoria Station. This position did not meet with general approval and, after years of negotiations, the statue was finally moved to Church Square and unveiled on 11 October 1954.
As part of the fundraising for the move the Kruger Genootskap in Pretoria sold commemorative medals, struck by the SA Mint in Afrikaans and English. The silver and bronze medals were available separately, but the gold medal was only sold as part of a boxed set of 3: price £7/10/-
