Robert Ruark
Published by Safari Press
Reprint Hardcover.
"On Hunting Big Game," Introduction by Eva Monley, Author was famed hunter of big game, Book is "story of a man's education as a hunter" including pices about his first gun and his many safaris.
"Robert Ruark's first safari was in Kenya and Tanganyika, accompanied only by his wife, a white hunter and a staff of Africans; it was followed by many trips in Africa, India and elsewhere. This book brings together the author's reminiscences of big game hunting - whether by gun or camera. His broad experience as a hunter and his skill as a master teller of tales both contribute to making [this book] as vivid and vigorous as any of his famous novels."
Robert Ruark once wrote, "I have been on possibly 20 safaris. I have shot three elephant of over a hundred pounds per tusk, killed a couple of lion. I have lost count on leopard - maybe 20 - and have no idea about buffalo; maybe a hundred. wildebeeste, gerenuk, oryx, duiker - in general, camp meat, must run into a thousand. I have shot three tigers, been severely mauled by a leopard." The author gives an account of his education as a hunter, beginning with "the lessons that Ruark learned from his grandfather [which] still applied when he shot his first lion on safari in Africa, more than twenty years later." His subsequent career as a hunter extended across the world, from India to Alaska, in Mozambique and Uganda, in Kenya and Tanganyika and elsewhere.
