If every man has his castle, it follows that every man should have a throne within said castle – this listing is just such a chair. Uncompromisingly and unapologetically masculine.
On offer today is an utterly magnificent colonial style rocking chair in solid wood, with over-stuffed cushions that have been recently reupholstered in an understated dark blue tartan.
This chair is huge, and despite its age in superb condition – one small chip on the side on the lower part of the seat frame – apart from that it’s flawless – as new.
The wing-backed solid wooden frame has a number of attractive features of the type associated with this style of chair. The dark wood timber of construction utilized throughout the piece is a consistent 30mm thick. The arm rests are superbly and smoothly curved and contoured. The arm rests terminate in outward flaring knurled grips. The wheel sides of the chair feature exquisitely finished hub, spoke and rim detail. The seat spring mat beneath the cushion is a wonder to behold – well engineered and incredibly robust. The powerful compression spring system of the rocking mechanism below the mat is so well constructed that it will probably last another couple of hundred years.
The over-stuffed cushions, recently redone in a dark and distinguished blue tartan, each weigh of the order of 10kg (this is not a typo – together the 2 cushions do weigh some 20kg). The firmness of the cushioning, offers maximum support, and is also extremely comfortable.
To move on to the dimensions. The chair stands 104cm tall from the floor to the highest point on the wings. It is 75cm across, from the edge of one flared and knurled handgrip to the other. The cushions are 65cm long, 54cm wide and 26cm thick. The chair is 64cm deep, from front to back.
