This work, that expresses in material form a modern reinterpretation of the myth of Danaë, has taken over the entire space, even requiring structural work to be carried out on the pavilion built in 1914 by Alexei Shchusev in the form of a large square opening between the two floors. A bucket of coins forged by Zakharov each is a Danaë passes up through the opening in the ceiling. The coins shower down like fine rain in a circle from the upper to the lower level.
Vadim Zakharov (*1959, in Dushanbe, USSR, lives in Moscow and Berlin) belongs to the circle of artists known as the Moscow Conceptualists. His crucial role as archivist and protagonist of this movement has shaped his manner of working since the late 1970s, a manner which is characterized by exceptional creativity and independent artistic thinking. Participation and actionism have always been key forms of activity in his career. Udo Kittelmann, director of the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, is the first non-Russian curator of the Russian Pavilion and is presenting a new installation by the artist, with whom he has been working since 1995.
