A selection of prominent South Africans pay homage to the lone voice of conscience of the country for 36 years in Parliament.

Values Alive is a tribute to a remarkable woman and a courageous South African.
For 36 years Helen Suzman opposed apartheid and represented the conscience of the nation in Parliament. For a significant part of this career she was the sole voice of liberal opposition in the House of Assembly.
Of her career she modestly says: Its hard to say one has achieved anything except, I think, to keep certain values alive in this country certain democratic values.
At a time when South Africa is moving into a new era of negotiation politics, it is the values that Mrs Suzman so valiantly kept alive that now represent a possible solution for South Africa.
In Values Alive a variety of prominent South Africans pay tribute to Helen Suzman and her contribution to South Africa by examining aspects of her many faceted career and personality. They review not just her high intellectual and moral standards, but also the wit, charm, and vitality which marked her personal style.
From Ellen Kuzwayo on Helen Suzmans role in fighting for the liberation of the oppressed to Harry Oppenheimer on Helen Suzmans economics; from Joe Latakgomo on the grudgingly respectful attitudes to Helen Suzman found among black activists to Nadine Gordimer on Helen Suzmans refusal to be indifferent to what was happening in her country. Also included are pieces by British Ambassador Sir Robin Renwick and EJ Kahn Jnr, an American journalist who wrote on Helen Suzman for the New Yorker.

This is a fascinating book and a fine tribute to an outstanding South African. Shortly after her retirement in 1989, Helen Suzman was paid the signal honour of being made a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. South Africa has no equivalent honour for its outstanding sons and daughters; we can only honour with our salutes and our cheers. Values Alive is a salute and a cheer to an exceptional career.

Including contributions by Neville Alexander, Ann Bernstein, John Dugard, Sheena Duncan, Colin Eglin, Laurence Gandar, Nadine Gordimer, E J Kahn, Jr., Ellen Kuzwayo, Joe Latakgomo, Phyllis Lewsen, Irene Menell, Nic Olivier, Harry Oppenheimer, Robin Renwick, June Sinclair, Jan Steyn, David Welsh.
