Signed v.e. for Van Essche in the print!!

Maurice van Essche was a Belgian artist, a pupil of Matisse! He studied under him twice, in Paris, and later in the South of France.

Maurice van Essche resided in Cape Town 1940-1971.

He was born in 1906 in Antwerp Belgium and died in 1977 in Thonon, Lake Geneva, France.

These cards were produced in 1967 while he was still at the Continental School of Art in Dean Street, Gardens, Cape Town, which he founded in 1946.

He is now one of South Africa's most celebrated artists and his African and South African figural studies are amongst his most sought after works!
