Hed Kandi: Winter Chill 06.04 Review by Rob Theakston
Like most of Hed Kandi's releases, this two-disc edition of the Winter Chill series features the same Naked Music-esque aesthetics. However, what's noticeably different about this edition is the music contained inside. Gone are the 60-minute excursions into warm, percussion-laden deep house moments du jour, replaced by trip-hop beats and vocals by nearly anonymous chanteuses. The second disc is probably the most curious, original, and unexpected disc in the entire Hed Kandi catalog. Contributions from Mazzy Star, Lamb, Natalie Imbruglia, and Snow Patrol are all here, which is an oddity for a series priding itself on being a dominant force in commercial dance music. Nonetheless, it's a nice blend of smooth textures and a well curated song list that serves its purpose during the bleak months of winter.
