Bargrooves: Indian Summer Review by Jason Birchmeier
In 2003 Kinky Sweet released a four-part series of Bargrooves double-disc mixes, one for each of the seasons. Regardless of the season, each particular entry in the series emphasizes the sort of sensual house music so often associated with the upscale nightclubs of London, San Francisco, and other sophisticated cities and the handbag-toting, well-coiffed urban barflies who frequent them fashionably. These are double-disc CDs, each disc compiled similarly and mixed smoothly. The selections generally aren't too commercial or well-known, though the labels from which the selections are licensed are sometimes recognizably name-brand (Wave, Om, Atlantic Jaxx, etc.). The style of house is certainly of the deep variety, though sunny and sexy rather than dark and edgy, more California than Chicago. The Indian Summer entry isn't much different from the others -- Fall (autumn), En Hiver (winter), and Primavera (spring) -- and thus should please those who are looking for some more Bargrooves. Not unlike the Naked Music run of thematic mixes (namely Nude Dimensions), these Bargrooves titles are, above all, consistent -- if you like one, you'll probably like them all, assuming you don't tire of them after a while.
