Field Chaplains during the Anglo-Boer War


A archival box of materials (with some original photographs) on prominent Field Chaplains of the Republican Forces (ZAR and OVS), incl. Reverend A. P. Burger (Field Chaplain to President Kruger) and Reverend J.D. Kestell (Chaplain to President Steyn), including content on the 1914 Rebellion and the 1933 Bible translation.


In the box is an augmented copy of Reverend A. P. Burgers Worsteljare: Herinneringe van Ds. A. P. Burger, Veldprediker by die Republikeinse Magte tydens die Tweede Vryheidsoorlog, inserted in the pages is original antique photograph of Reverend Burger in the field (possibly GEA), an comprehensive, original obituary (The Middleburg Observer, July 1932) on the passing and funeral of his wife, Mr. A. P. G. (Jannie) Burger ("'n Oorlogsheldin").  The book is accompanied by a bound, facsimile copy of Burgers manuscript (Myn Ballingschap Als Krygs Gevangene Naar Brits oost Indie 1902), scanned at the National Archives, and a copy of Wartime Correspondence of My Parents by Ds. Burger's son.


Materials on the Reverend J.D. Kestell, who together with President Steyn and Commander-in-Chief of the OFS forces, General Christiaan De Wet, formed a formidable political, military and spiritual triumvirate during the War, include an original vintage photograph of Reverend Kestell, and research (with reprinted photographs) on Reverend Kestell and the role of the Church during the Boer War and 1914 Rebellie.


Also included, a copy of a related philatelic exhibit on Rev. A.A. Louw, The Louw family: pastors in church, field and camp, letters and experiences of a pastor family during the Anglo-Boer War.
