A ready-to-use peat and perlite mix specially blended for Venus Fly Traps and other carnivorous plants. No fertiliser, perfect acidity, great moisture balance exactly what these plants need to thrive.
Bag size is 1dm which is equavalent to 1 litre of potting.

Commonly name: Venus Fly Trap Soil / Carnivorous Plant Mix

Product name: Premium Carnivorous Plant Soil Peat & Perlite (1 dm³)

Our Venus Fly Trap Soil is a carefully balanced blend of sphagnum peat and perlite, packaged in a convenient 1 dm³ bag. This mix mirrors the nutrient-poor, acidic, wet-yet-airy conditions that carnivorous plants naturally grow in.

Venus Fly Traps (Dionaea muscipula) cannot tolerate normal potting soil it's far too rich and can burn their roots. This special mix keeps things lean and acidic, allowing the plant to catch its own nutrients rather than absorbing them from the soil. The peat holds moisture beautifully without becoming muddy or anaerobic, while the perlite keeps the structure open so roots can breathe.

Whether you're repotting a young Fly Trap, refreshing an older plant, or growing sundews, pitcher plants, or butterworts, this mix provides the right environment for strong root development and healthy traps.

Venus Fly Trap Soil Uses

Water logo

Watering

Always use distilled water, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water when growing Venus Fly Traps in this mix. Peat naturally absorbs minerals, so using tap water may eventually cause mineral build-up and damage the roots. Keep the soil moist at all times but not waterlogged a tray with a few millimetres of water works well in summer, while winter watering can be a little lighter.

Light logo

Light

This soil is formulated to support Fly Traps that receive bright, direct sun. Aim for at least 46 hours of sunlight daily, either outdoors or in a sunny window. Strong light encourages vibrant colouration and healthy trap production.

Soil Logo

Soil Composition

  • Sphagnum peat for gentle moisture retention and natural acidity

  • Perlite to keep the mix light, airy, and well-draining

  • Zero fertiliser essential for carnivorous species

  • Nutrient-poor by design so the plant can rely on catching insects

This mix is completely free from compost, bark, coco peat, or any fertilising agents, ensuring safety for all carnivorous plants.

Fertilizing logo

Feeding

Fly Traps do not absorb nutrients from the soil. They get everything they need from the insects they catch. Never add fertiliser it will burn the roots.

Repotting logi

Repotting

Repot every 1218 months or whenever the peat starts to compact. Refreshing the mix keeps the root zone airy and helps prevent mould or mineral build-up. Repot during early spring just before active growth begins.

Temerature image

Temperature

Suitable for Fly Traps kept between 15 °C and 30 °C. Outdoors on a sunny patio is ideal for most of the year, but bring the plant in if frost is expected.

FAQ's

Q: Can I use this mix for sundews or Nepenthes?
Yes it's perfect for most temperate and subtropical carnivorous plants that prefer low-nutrient, acidic soil.

Q: Does it contain fertiliser?
No. Carnivorous plants must grow in nutrient-free soil.

Q: How long does 1 dm³ last?
Usually enough to repot one to two medium Venus Fly Trap or top up the pots of two smaller plants.

Q: Can I add sand?
You can add a little silica sand if you prefer extra drainage, but the peat-perlite blend is fully ready to use as is.
