Venus flytraps belong to a fascinating plant genre known as carnivorous-, or 'meat-eating' plants that trap and digest insects
There are quite a few different species in this carnivorous plant group, although the venus fly trap is the most well known
Venus flytraps are native to bog-like areas in North- and South Carolina in the USA
Ok, Cool! How does it work?
Mature venus flytraps can reach a height of 10-20 cm and produces tall flower stalks with white flowers. In cultivation, it is recommended to cut flower stalks to preserve the plant's energy
During spring and summer, healthy plants grow long leaves with rounded halves on the leaf-end
These rounded halves are fused on one side, producing a trap that acts like jaws
Each trap has nectar glands to lure insects and has 2-4 spikes on it's surface that are sensitive to touch
Once an insect triggers these spikes, the trap will snap shut, using the teeth on the edge to encage the insect
The insect will be digested over a couple of days and the trap will re-open, revealing the dry husk of the insect - ready for it's next meal
Traps have a limited lifespan thus for this reason - even though venus flytraps are the most awesomely fantastic plants in the world - they might not be the world's best pest-control
I'm convinced!! How do I grow them?
These plants thrive as outdoor plants and require swampy conditions consisting of a special type of nutrient-free soil, moist growing media via rain or clean (mineral-free) water, lots of sunlight and a friendly greeting each morning
