Wanneer hongersnood Betlehem tref, bly sommige hoop vir reën terwyl Naomi en haar gesin die lang reis na Moab aanpak op soek na groener weivelde. Mismoedig en brandarm besluit Naomi om alleen terug te keer na Bethlehem. Maar haar skoondogter Rut weier om haar alleen te laat gaan. Ten spyte daarvan dat sy en Naomi waarskynlik die res van hulle lewe as armoedige weduwees sal leef, bly Rut hoop vir 'n beter toekoms ... en miskien selfs 'n tweede kans op die liefde.
