Vervain

Bulk dried herb, uses include strengthening nervous system, easing tension, stress, anxiety and depression. Aids digestion. Reduces inflammation of the gall bladder and jaundice.

Vervain is a herbaceous perrenial, which grows to a height of between 30 and 70 cm and is found in many parts of the world including South Africa. Pairs of lobed, oval leaves grow opposite each other along the erect, branched stems. Long, slender spikes of pale lilac flowers hang from the top of the plant in summer.

Vervain has been used for centuries for a variety of infections, especially colds , influenza and other conditions associated with fever. This traditional application has been supported by new research that indicates that the herb has immune-boosting properties.

As a nervous system tonic, herbalists prescribe it for fatigue, tension and mild depression. It is also beneficial during convalescence and for a lack of appetite. Vervain has antispasmodic activity and is used to relieve muscle cramps, colic and period pain. It increases certain hormonal secretions, including those involved with breast-milk production.

Topically the plant will treat sunburn, nappy rash and cracked or chapped skin.

Dosage:

1 Teaspoon of dried herb infused into a cup of hot water. Strain and drink. Sweet with honey to taste if required.

Cautions:

• Do not use if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients - if allergic reaction occurs discontinue use.
• Do not take with the medication levodopa (L-dopa).
• It is not advisable to use vervain when taking any medications to raise or lower blood pressure, or with any form of hormonal therapy.
• Do not exceed the dose as high doses have been reported to cause central nervous system paralysis.
• Do not use during pregnancy.
• Keep out of reach of children.
