This wonderful, heavy, bronze Austrian cow bell from the early 1900's, with its original wide leather strap or collar is in great condition with a lovely sound and appears to have won a special award. It has a decorative pattern around the top and three raised figures around the middle and is attached to a large leather collar which is beautifully decorated with small white cowry shells, stitched onto the strap in the shape of flowers, with green, yellow, and red wool bordering the collar. There's also a small brass plaque mounted on the collar which reads 'Ehrenpreis' 'd. Pinzgauer Zuchtverbandes' 'Salzburg - Tirol', which translates roughly, to a special award or prize in relation to the collar and breed of cattle, in and around Salzburg and Tirol in Austria. The collar also has a large inner leather strap with buckle and an additional narrow outer strap and buckle. The bell measures 14,5cm with a diameter of 17,8cm, has an overall hanging length with collar of 59cm, and a width of 16,5cm and weighs in total 4,5kg.
NOTE: These large bells had various distinctive sounds and were worn around the necks of cattle so that the owners or Shepherds could easily recognise their herd and locate them in the pastures, no matter the distance.
