The old German city of Hamburg is located on the Elbe River about 75 miles from the North Sea. It was founded by Charlemagne in the 9th centaury. In 1241 it joined Lubeck to form the Hanseatic League.
The mint was leased to the citizens in 1292, however the local Hohlpfennings had been struck almost 50 years earlier. In 1510 Hamburg was made a Fee City, though in fact it had been free for about 250 years.
This collection of Seventeen Silver Dreilings, Sechslings and Schillings were been found as a small hoard by a metal detectorist on the banks of the Elbe River in 1998. They are dated from the 1780s to the middle 1800s and condition varies from worn to Very Fine.
