This is a very rare 1856 German engraving of the mission station of Mamre in the Western Cape.
The detail is magnificent, including a crowd of schoolchildren playing outside a school, which is still there today, the old church, which is also still there, and a group of German missionaries working in a field on a hill outside the mission.
Key to all the features in German at the bottom of the engraving.
58 cm x 46 cm in frame, print itself is 23.5 cm x 35 cm.
This engraving has been newly restored and carefully cleaned by the very experienced parliamentary restorer here in Cape Town. There is some damage but the print can still be very much appreciated for what it is and the amazing detail that it shows.
Newly framed in a German silver frame and with a new white mount.
One of the rarer 19th century prints of the Cape.
