Victorian Army '45th Foot Reg.' L.S. & G.C. Medal (1848-9)
This original, full-size, Victorian 'Long Service and Good Conduct' medal was awarded to 'SERGT. JOHN Mc. DONALD' who served with the '45th Regiment of Foot' (Nottinghamshire & Sherwood Foresters). For some reason, and I've come across a second on the internet (photo listed), it is fitted with a different suspension bar, like the one on the 1858 'India Mutiny' Medal. This medal is in excellent condition, nicely tarnished and appears to be correctly named and dated on the rim for that period.
In 1843 the regiment served in the Cape of Good Hope and later in Natal, between Durban & Pietermaritzburg, with the suburb of 'Sherwood' on the Berea and '45th Cutting', an area just outside Durban, being named after the regiment.
Please feel free to email me with any queries, and please look closely at the pictures provided as they are of the actual item and form a vital part of the description.
