Victorian Cased Silver Aide Memoire/Purse (1898)
This fabulous, Victorian, sterling silver 'aide memoire' is beautifully decorated with repousse acanthus leaves on all the corners and on the front with the popular 'Reynolds Angels' pattern (five cherubs amongst the clouds) all in relief. It was made in Birmingham, England in 1898 by the renowned silversmith 'Henry Matthews' (HM) and on the back it's engraved with two monograms along with the date '28.12.1900'. The interior is intact and in lovely condition with its original, green silk fittings, complete with bone notepad and pencil. This super piece is in excellent condition and comes complete with its original custom-made presentation case with the original retailer's details, gilt stamped inside the lid which reads 'BY APPOINTMENT TO HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR' 'Jewellers Myers Bros' 'Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, & East London. South Africa'. The purse measures 10cm x 7,5cm and weighs 107,5g and the case measures 13,5cm x 11cm x 3,5cm.
