A finely modelled late-Victorian cast-iron adjustable reading or music stand, retaining its original green japanned finish and complete with its original weighted page-holding weights. The cords themselves have been replaced
The stand is constructed in solid cast iron, with a pierced rectangular backplate decorated in Gothic-revival tracery and quatrefoil motifs, reflecting the architectural influence common to British decorative ironwork of the late nineteenth century. The backplate is mounted on a central upright with a fully functioning tilt mechanism, allowing the angle to be adjusted and securely held via the original screw.
The form is both practical and sculptural, designed for use on a table, piano top, lectern shelf, or desk, and would originally have been used to support sheet music, hymn books, or large-format volumes. The broad, bell-shaped base provides excellent stability, while the pierced construction reduces visual weight without compromising strength.
The stand retains its original late-Victorian japanned paintwork, with honest wear and surface losses confined to edges and contact points, and natural oxidation where the paint has thinned over time. There is no evidence of later repainting. The tilt mechanism operates smoothly, and the stand remains complete with its original hanging page weights a detail often lost on surviving examples.
A compact yet substantial example, combining functional design with period decorative character.
