A very unique 19th century glass piece taking the shape of a basket with frilled and folded rim, and having a thorn-stem handle. The ribbed and quilted base is bright yellow, and striated above the waist toward a clear glass frill on the rim. The interior of the upper section is a bright tomato-red, and the striations from beneath create a ripple-like effect when looking at the red. Arching over it in a squarish shape is the clear glass handle with bands of "thorns" encircling it.
This unusual piece is believed to be from the Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. which operated in Massachusetts, U.S.A., from 1825 to 1888. Certainly it is striking in shape and colour for a period that is often thought of very "colourlessly"! Designs in glass at this time were in fact very bold.
The glass with all its vulnerable extensions, although not very thin, has survived in superb condition with not a chip or a crack. The basket is 18.5cm high, 13 - 14 cm in diameter across the top, 12cm diameter at widest part of bottom of the basket and 6cm across the base.
