A collection of one hundred and forty-nine engravings. Almost a century ago, during the relatively short period from 1875 till 1895, elegant hand-cut pictures provided a panorama of South African life, the like of which, both for charm and for accuracy, will never be seen again. A small group of artists, virtually forgotten, with their pencils and their engraving tools, portrayed the habits, landscapes, animals and institutions of our great-grandparents and grandparents. Today these Victorian woodcuts lie scattered amomng thousands of pages of old periodicals to be found in libraries and archives throughout South Africa. A stunning collection selected by well known historian Eric Rosenthal. Hardcover with dust jacket published by Tafelberg, 1975. 150 pages. Good sound condition, jacket under thick plastic cover, slight insect damage to front inside cover and end paper. Tracked postage is R65.00.
