Published by Orion Publishing Group, Limited, 1985, hardcover, illustrated, landscape format, index, 160 pages, condition: as new.
The book traces the changing character of English interior design and home life during the Victorian era in representative contemporary Victorian watercolors, drawings, and photographs.
An engaging and insightful examination of the interior decorating style of the long Victorian era. A perfect compliment to my recent interest in the architecture, this book helped me understand the correlation between Victorian social trends and their impact on the home. Everything from the dogmatic 'educationalists' whose teachings cemented the austere moirés of the time to the expanding doorways meant to accommodate 'crinoline of every size,' (hysterical) this volume covers it all. (Its only flaw is that it focuses entirely on people of means--if you want to know how everyone else was doing, you'll have to read Dickens or maybe check out the aftermath in How the Other Half Lives.) If you want to walk away with a fulsome appreciation of Victorian interior life, this is the way to go.
