PEWTER THE POOR MANS SILVER The first English pewter is Romano-British and dates back as far as the year 400 B.C. Then suddenly, for no apparent reason, this delightful alloy, comprising 90 per cent Cornish tin and 10 per cent lead, copper or antimony, fell out of favour and did not make its re-appearence until the 14th century. Precious metals such as pewter were commonly used in the UK, Germany and across Scandinavia. PEWTER, AN ALLOY OF TIN, WAS SOMETIMES KNOWN AS POOR MANS SILVER, AS IT RESEMBLED SILVER CLOSELY WHEN POLISHED. It is known that the Vikings valued silver much more than gold. The Viking Age is the Age of Silver Economy. Historically, traditional jewelry is made of silver or silver-colored metals.
