FFEP shows Vinnicome family tree.
Slight yellowing and a little foxing to inside covers but generally in pretty good used condition for its age.
'This is the chronicle of a Natal family during the last three decades of the nineteenth century. They were never far from the fast changing history of a new country. So much of what happened to the Vinnicombes shows how ordinary people in the separate countries of the Transvaal and Natal were equally victims of the Anglo-Boer War.
Tom and Rachel Vinnicombe's lives depended upon the waggon. he mostly grew up in Durban and Pietermaritzburg but his life was to develop, after the period of the Anglo-Zulu War and Majuba, up and over the Drakensberg. they trekked after gold but later moved from growing town to growing town building gothis copybook churches for the Dutch Reformed congregations of the highveld. His disgust at the Jameson Raid made him become a Burgher of the Transvaal Republic.
The Angl-Boer War split his loyalties. he refused to serve the Republic and escaped to act with the Natal Guides for Buller's forces as they advanced. he risked being executed for treason by taking food to his family who had remained in the Transvaal. he might well have been captured without the help of his Boer neighbours.
