VINTAGE 1940S HUBERT DAVIES 6 LINE DICTOGRAPH MASTER STATION PHONE
AND OLD 1940S HUBERT DAVIES & CO LTD DICTOGRAPH IN A NICE WOODEN OAK BOX.
IT WAS SUPPLIED BY HUBERT DAVIES & CO LTD IN SOUTH AFRICA BUT MANUFACTURED BY THE DICTOGRAPH TELEPHONES COMPANY IN SURREY ENGLAND DURING THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY. REG NO 781632
THE 6 LINES WERE MARKED TYPIST, STOCKROOM, STORES, RECEPTION, SALES, RING. CLEARLY USED IN A COMPANY SETUP IN SOUTH AFRICA.
Dictograph acted like a Master Station or Intercon whereby you could phone all your departments by just flicking a switch and start talking. The main drawback was extensive wiring needed to each department.
Originally intended as a handy communications device it gradually developed in one of the first eavesdropping devices due to its sensitive microphone. The Detective Dictograph was successfully used by private eye companies to spy on criminals. The recordings made by the device were so clear that convictions were made based upon recorded evidence.
