Because of its large iron ore deposits, Sheffield (England) was a mecca, as early as 1160, for cutlery production. By the mid-1800s, over 100 cutlery manufacturers operated out of Sheffield, filling an eager market with high quality knives and scissors.

Solingen (Germany), perhaps Sheffields most serious rival, also had a fine reputation as a source of quality cutlery. In fact, it was known in Northern Europe as the City of the Blades, and it remains the cutlery center of Germany to this day.

Not surprisingly, immigrants from both Sheffield (UK) and Solingen (GER) were primarily responsible for establishing the first cutlery businesses in America.

GERMAN BROTHERS JOHN AND HENRI FOUNDED THE CLAUSS SHEAR COMPANY IN FREMONT (OH) IN 1877 (INITIALLY AS THE ELYRIA SHEAR WORKS).  AFTER A DEVASTATING FIRE, FOLLOWED BY A REBUILD, THEY CHANGED THE NAME TO CLAUS SHEAR COMPANY  AND BECAME ONE OF THE WORLDS LARGEST SCISSOR MANUFACTURERS. THEY ARE STILL IN BUSINESS.

Scissors come in all shapes and sizes and and are designed for a variety of different purposes, including to cut hair, paper, fabric, or thread. Seamstresses, gardeners, school children, medical professionals, and regular people use them every day. Wed be lost without them! These type of tin scissors or snips is good for cutting thin gauge metal sheet, metal mesh, and other mainly flat metal items.

Drop forging is a process that uses a pair of impression dies and a heavy hammer to form and compress metal bars or billets into complex shapes. The impression or die cavity is the desired shape of the final forging. The equipment used in the drop forging process is known as a power or drop hammer.

AVIATION SNIPS EXPLAINED
Aviation snips are handheld cutters that are designed for use with sheet metal. Also known as sheet snips, they support straight cuts, left cuts and right cuts. THEY ARE KNOWN AS AVIATION SNIPS BECAUSE THEY WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR USE IN THE AEROSPACE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY. AIRPLANES ARE MADE OF SHEET METAL. To form fuselages and other components, manufacturers must perform irregular cuts. Aviation snips are ideal for making these cuts because they support more than just straight cuts.
AVIATION SNIPS WITH A RED HANDLE ARE DESIGNED FOR LEFT CUTS, whereas aviation snips with a green handle are designed for right cuts. You may also come across aviation snips with a yellow handle. Those with a yellow handle are capable of performing both left and right cuts.

CLAUSS R-7 USA DROP FORGED USA
Clauss Cutlery is a cutlery brand now owned by the Acme United Corporation since 2004. It was founded as Elyria Shear Works in 1877 by John and Henrie Clauss in Elyria, Ohio. At one time the company was the largest manufacturer of scissors and shears in the world.

CLAUSS QUALITY:
Shears and scissors used for cutting operations on production lines have to be better than those generally sold for home use. In the home they cut "once in a while/' but in industrial use they often cut every day, all day.
Clauss specializes in production-line cutting tools, and makes them "the hard way" for good reason. Clauss shears are not "cast" because that would make them too brittle. They are not "cold forged" because that makes them too soft inside. They are not "inlaid blades" because they bend too easily, and can get out of adjustment if they are dropped.
Instead, Clauss makes their cutting tools by Hot Hammer Forging special cutlery steels that harden tougher, can be edged finer, and hold cutting edge longer. Handles and blades are one solid piece of rugged steel, and they are held together with specially-made tapered steel screws, pressure-seated to hold their adjustment permanently. Plating is full, heavy coverage for maximum rust protection.
All of this extra quality you get in Clauss cutting tools is hidden until they are put to work on production operations. Then it shows up fast in lower maintenance cost . . . more efficient cutting . . . and longer tool life.
