Vintage 1960s Cold Cast Metal Circus Maximus Roman Charioteer Statue on Onyx Base

RICARDO DI ROME REMEMBER ROME. A VINTAGE 1960S COLD CAST METAL WITH BRONZE FINISH CIRCUS MAXIMUS ROMAN TWO HORSE CHARIOTEER STATUE ON A BEAUTIFUL ONYX BASE.

A Roman chariot was a type of horse-drawn vehicle that was used in ancient Rome for transportation and in chariot racing. Roman chariots were typically made of wood and were small and light, with two wheels and an open platform for the driver and passengers. They were also decorated with intricate carvings, gold and bronze plating, and colorful paintings.

Roman chariots were powered by either two (called a Biga) or four (Quadriga) horses and were driven by a charioteer, who stood on the platform and controlled the horses with a set of reins. They were used for transportation by the wealthy and powerful, as well as for ceremonial and religious purposes.

Chariot racing was a popular form of entertainment in ancient Rome, and the chariot races were held in the Circus Maximus, an enormous stadium in Rome that could hold up to 250,000 spectators. The races were highly competitive and could be quite dangerous, as the chariots would race around the track at high speeds and sometimes collide with each other. This statue is beautifully designed, sculpted and handcrafted to the finest detail in cold cast metal (Bronze/pewter) finish.

Although the Circus Maximus was designed for chariot racing (ludi circenses), other events were held there, including gladiatorial combats (ludi gladiatorii) and wild animal hunts (venationes), athletic events and processions.

The Circus Maximus was many centuries older and considerably larger than the Colosseum. Chariot races draw the largest crowds in Rome and throughout the empire and continued to do so centuries after the gladiatorial games faded away.

However in the 6th century AD the circus fell into disuse. The last chariot race in Circus Maximus was held in 549 AD, after which the site was abandoned.

The words Ricordo Di Roma is not an Italian artist name but simply means Remember Rome.

ONYX:
Onyx refers to a parallel banded variety of silicate mineral chalcedony. It is formed of bands of chalcedony in alternating colours.
Onyx is translucent and generally comes in different colours like honey, green, and red. Since it is translucent, it allows the light to pass through. The level of translucency varies among onyx slabs and is dependent on the colour, thickness, and surface finish. You can make it honed or polished for a high gloss. Another incredible feature of onyx is its waves and circle patterns. It typically has a wide range of yellow hues as a result of iron deposits, but there are some different colours like green, white, orange, gold, pink, and brown.
The name onyx comes from Roman mythology, the Goddess of Beauty. Onyx is deposited by dripping water movement followed by evaporation between the drops. This action deposits calcium carbonate from the water on the formation. Thus, we can say that onyx is also a chemical sedimentary stone.
Onyx is different from marble. When we look from the outside, it is difficult to distinguish from marble, but onyx is transparent and marble is not. Marble is extracted from layers close to the surface of the earth, but onyx is extracted from layers much deeper than marble. Marble is metamorphosed due to heat and pressure and becomes harder. Onyx is a microsilicate quartz and is often translucent with bands of colour. It is not as hard as The other materials used for countertops such as granite or marble.
