RAPIDOGRAPH:
A Rapidograph is a technical pen used byan engineer, architect or draftsperson to make lines of constant width forarchitectural, engineering or technical drawings. It is called"rapidograph", since it was a line of products first made by Germancompany Rotring. Comparing with fountain pens it has an important advantage:one need not fill it up constantly. Rapidograph is equipped with a tube and aspecial bottle of ink. Inside the tube there is a thin point which makes inkflow constant and reliable.
Prototype of rapidograph came in 1928when specialists from the Rotring Company invented the first ink pen calledTiku (Inkograph). Nib was replaced with a tube. So, the appearance of blotsbecame impossible. In 1953 on the basis of Tiku there was designed a prototypeof a technical pen Rapidograph. It secured even ink flow and possibility todraw line of certain width. Rotring was the first company which invented such aunique tool.
Rapidograph consists of a hollow nibwith a thin point with weight inside and a plastic body with an ink cartridge.Thanks to weight the point goes up and down and its round nib allows to drawlines in any directions. Tip of the rapidograph lets draw lines of the samewidth.
While drawing with the rapidograph oneshould be very careful because this technical pen is a very fragile. It alsoneeds constant attention. Generally the rapidograph is used by designers,architectures, graphic artists, engineers, etc.
 
ROTRING (1928-1998):
The name "Rotring" directlytranslates to "red ring", which refers to the company's signature: ared band placed around the barrel of the pen. The company's name was changed toRotring in the early 1970s to match the trademark.
The company was established in 1928 as"Tintenkuli Handels GmbH. The company's first product was the"Tintenkuli", a type of pen with a narrow steel tube instead of aconventional nib.
Although stylographs never overtookfountain pens for use in writing, by 1953 the Rotring "Rapidograph"model became the prototypical technical pen of its age.
The advent in the 1990s ofcomputer-aided design (CAD) saw the partial demise of the technical drawingpen. To combat this, Rotring diversified its range of graphic pens, pencils andmarkers.
In 1998 Rotring was taken over bySanford an American company specialising in graphic products.
