VINTAGE 1980S SLEEPING TOM BY JULIAN WILLIAMS LIMITED EDITION PRINT NO 52 OF 100
THIS IS A LIMITED EDITION PRINT OF A SLEEPING TOM. NO 52 OF 100. THE ORIGINAL ARTWORK WAS DONE BY JULIAN WILLIAMS FROM WALES IN THE 1980S. IT IS SIGNED BY THE ARTIST.
THE ARTIST GIVES THE FOLLOWING HISTORY BEHIND THIS ARTWORK: Hello, my name is Julian Williams. I am in my late sixties and live in Pembrokeshire Wales. The girl I married, Mami, loves cats, so it was inevitable that I made lots of etchings of her cats. In the 1980s, when I was selling my etchings at Covent Garden, we owned an Abyssinian (Perdita), Somali (Jocasta) and Manx cat (Taro). We chose the Abyssinian because of its elegant stature, and it made a good model for my drawing exercises. In the early years The Sleeping Tom artwork was our top selling item.
ABYSSIAN CATS: Strikingly wild looking, the Abyssinian gives the impression of an extreme athlete who has just wandered in from the jungle. Lithe and long, with a lean, muscular build and moderately wedge-shaped head and large, almond shaped eyes, the Abyssinian is a supermodel of a cat. From the large ears, small oval feet and long slender tail, the Abyssinian is covered in a fine, short and glossy coat. Although named after the country now known as Egypt, and apparently one of the oldest known breeds, the Abyssinian did not originate from Egypt at all. Studies by geneticists show that the most likely origins for this breed are the coast of the Indian Ocean and parts of Southeast Asia. They gained the name due to the first of these cats imported to the UK being brought from Egypt, and they do closely resemble cats depicted in ancient Egyptian paintings and sculptures. They were first shown in the UK in 1871 at Crystal Palace and it seems that they were brought back to the UK following the departure of British troops from Abyssinia in 1868.
