VRIESENHOF WINES: Situated on the foothills of Stellenbosch Mountain, Vriesenhof is recognised as one of the great terroirs of South Africa. Ancient river terraces and commanding mountain vistas provide the backdrop to Vriesenhof's vineyards and hillside cellar. Vriesenhof has a history dating back to the early eighteen century where its south facing slopes are perfectly positioned to produce wines of a fine character. The estate has plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinotage and small block of Pinot Noir. Youll find it between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountains amidst the Paradyskloof Valley. Three ranges of superb wines are produced including the labels of Vriesenhof, Talana Hill and Paradyskloof. The current owner of Vriesenhof, Jan "Boland" Coetzee, is ranked among the much-loved icons of the South African wine industry. A former Springbok rugby player, he studied viticulture in 1963 at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1980, he bought Vriesenhof and produced his first wine a year later in 1981. During 1987, close friends bought a neighbouring farm and eventually, the two were joined to form the estate now known as Vriesenhof Vineyards. Jan passed the winemaking reins over successor, Nicky Claasens in 2010.
