This World War 2 period badge issued to commemorate the transition of power (accession of General Jan Smuts) and the entry of South Africa into the war in alliance with Britain and France. On the 4th September 1939 Smuts became Prime Minister after war had been declared following Germanys invasion of Poland. The badge forms part of the Militaria Collection of Lt Col AD Irvine who served in the Union Defence Force in North Africa and Europe during WW2 and for the South African Air Force.
