Vintage Apothecary hand-held balance scale 1920-1950 era
A very elegant hand-held Apothecary balance scale, dating to around the 1920-1950 era. As can be observed from the photo above, it remains incredibly accurate - as it should be, this being a "Class B" balance. The Class B was a term given to very accurate balances, weighing substances from 100 mg to 50 gram maximum. In the case of the above, it states 'to weigh 2" whether this is 2 gram or 20 gram is debatable. The 'equal arm beam' is in steel and the accuracy would be from the steel 'stirrups' at each end which 'balance' on the beam itself and from where the steel pans are connected. In most balance scales, the pans are connected directly to the beam itself. This was no toy and would have been an expensive item in the pharmacy. It is difficult to date it accurately, but, in the early 1960's, the name 'class B' was done away with and been renamed as 'Class II'. The name VAID' appears on the beam, and, today, there is a very well-known 'VAID' company in India producing highly sought after electronic balances. Unfortunately, I cannot find any past history about the company.
The balance is still in excellent condition and comes with its original wooden box which measures 21cm x 11 cm x 4 cm high.
