Vintage Art Deco Faceted Graduated Citrine Amber Color Chrystal Bead Necklace in Velvet lined box 40cm Long
ITEM RELISTED DUE TO NON PAYMENT.
ON AUCTION IS A BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE CITRINE OR AMBER COLOURED CHRYSTAL BEADED NECKLACE. IT HAS FACETTED CHRYSTAL BEADS RANGING IN SIZE FROM AROUND 20MMx17MM TO 10MMx7MM IN SIZE.
THE 40CM LONG NECKLACE FEELS RATHER HEAVY AND WEIGHS AROUND 107G. IT COMES WITH A NICE LOCKABLE 25CM WIDE JEWELLERY BOX LINED WITH GREEN VELVET. THIS STYLE OF NECKLACE WAS PARTICULARLY POPULAR IN THE ART DECO PERIOD (AROUND THE 1920S AND 1930S) DEFINED BY ITS GEOMETRIC AND STYLIZED FORMS AND SYMMETRY.
Genuine amber (fossilized tree resin) has been used in jewellery for millennia, highly valued amber for its natural beauty, warmth to the touch, and purported protective and healing properties, calling it the "Gold of the North".
Glass bead making has a long tradition, dating back over 3,000 years to Ancient Roman times and earlier Egyptian faience. Venice was a major center for glass production, and by the 1860s, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) out-produced the Venetians in glass beads, becoming the world's largest exporter by 1928.
The consistent high demand and value of natural amber spurred the production of Amber-coloured glass beads which were developed to mimic the coveted yellow-to-orange hues of natural amber. The faceting on glass beads helps them catch the light, enhancing their appeal and mimicking the polished look of carved gemstones or real amber beads.
Vintage multi-strand amber-coloured glass bead necklaces remained popular into the mid 20th century from the 1950s and 1960s, often combining Czech, Venetian, Japanese, or German glass. Necklaces signed "Western Germany" are particularly known from this era, showcasing a rich tapestry of warm amber hues.
A KEY TO DISTINGUISH GENUINE AMBER (WHICH IS LIGHTWEIGHT, WARM TO THE TOUCH, AND FLOATS IN SALTWATER) FROM GLASS (WHICH IS HEAVIER, COLD TO THE TOUCH, AND SINKS IN SALTWATER). THE GLASS VERSIONS ARE PRIZED IN THEIR OWN RIGHT AS VINTAGE COSTUME JEWELRY, BUT THEY ARE NOT THE ORGANIC FOSSILIZED RESIN.
