Vintage Ashford Spinning wheel

The Ashford spinning wheel was designed by Walter Ashford in 1940 in his workshop (previous family laundry) in one of the most depressed suburbs in Christchurch, New Zealand, after the 1930s worldwide depression. 

Walter was awarded the Queen's Service Medal in 1986 in honor of the man who gave a lifetime's dedication to crafts and his local community.

The particular spinning machine on sale was given to by Hermina Pieterse pre. 1945 and recognition to her efforts as social worker in Krugersdorp near Johannesburg.

The Ashford is the most popular spinning wheel since  the separate drive band and bobbin brake adjustment is easy to understand and simple to operate. The bobbins are quick and easy to change. Scotch tension and 3 speed flyer allow for a wide variety of yarn to be spun. Horizontal adjustment of the maiden bar allows perfect alignment with the 3 speed whorl.
