OIL LAMP AND CENSER
This lamp is vintage and highly likely antique.
It is in exquisite, clean, buffed, polished and fully functional condition.
It is solid brass and weighs 330g.
Many parts of the world claim to be the origin of these lamps.
The lamp is most probably a Mediterranean lamp.
These lamps were popular during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods when advancements were made in metal working technology.
A lamp like this would be used by ancient people in a variety of ways.
They served utilitarian, ritualistic, and symbolic purposes.
Innkeepers and barkeepers, used oil lamps to light their businesses as well as the streets nearby.
Noblemen used lamps to light their paths when they or their guests were out after dark.
Fishermen are believed to have used lamps on their boats when going on night-time fishing excursions.
This lamp could have been used with whale oil. On account of the similarity between the hand-forged spout of this lamp and the whale oil multi spout lamp, this lamp could date as far back as pre-1800s and further.
To the present-day reproductions continue with modern casting making them less rustic than this lamp (as can be seen from the forging of the spout) and are used as flame oil lamps and censers in churches.
Add a generous measure of undiluted scented oil to the lamp oil and incense releases richly through the burning wick.
Various conventions for attaching a chain existed as can be seen in the demonstration picture.
This lamp ships with additional chains and bending rods for its purchaser to change the chain to its other popular configuration at preference.
Standing flat and not taking the hook hanger into account, the lamp stands 17cm tall. Dimension from the spout to the back of the lamp is 11cm.
