Vintage Brass South African Afrikaner Hasp and Staple.
This unusual brass 'hasp and staple' is a fabulous way for a proud South African to display pride in his Afrikaner heritage. It is certainly befitting of a rustic Karoo Homestead.
It has an iconic South African insignia of two Springboks on either side of a Protea.
It's precise age or origins are unknown to us , but it is of some age and has a lovely patina. It quite possibly once hung on the door of a military or official building or even on a large railway "Kis"
A collector would certainly recognise it.
It could possibly even have been made by an Italian Prisoner of War at the P.O.W camp in Zonderwater in Pretoria in the 1940s....
It bears the stamp "Ricotti Regd." at the back of the hasp and down the neck of the left Springbok, although the lettering has faded over time.
It is in excellent condition.
It does however not come with the original screws. It should be no problem acquiring modern ones to fit.
Height : 145mm
Width: 110m
