Vintage Bronze Coloured Metal Retro Looking Hanging Lantern Large 46cm High
THIS VINTAGE HANGING LANTERN IS MADE OF BRONZE COLOURED STEEL METAL AND THREE PIECES OF CURVED OR BENT GLASS PANES. WITH A HINGE AND ONE LATCH TO PLACE A LARGE THICK PILLAR CANDLE FROM THE TOP INSIDE. THE METAL WORK HAS DECORATIVE EMBOSSED AND CUTOUT DESIGNS. FINISHED OFF WITH AN ACORN SHAPED FINIAL AND RING HANDLE.
Lanterns have been used functionally, for light rather than decoration, since antiquity. Some used a wick in oil, while others were essentially protected candle-holders. Lanterns were usually made from a metal frame with several sides (usually four, but up to eight) or round, commonly with a hook or a hoop of metal on top. Windows of some translucent material may be fitted in the sides. Before the development of glass sheets, animal horn scraped thin and flattened was used as the translucent window.
